Suzanne Vega
A concert featuring songs from all eras of the brilliant American artist's long career, including hits such as "Tom's Dinner" and "Luka."
On stage, Suzanne Vega will be accompanied by her longtime guitarist, Gerry Leonard, also well known for his guitar work with other great artists such as David Bowie, Laurie Anderson, and Rufus Wainwright.
Suzanne Vega, born in California but raised in Spanish Harlem and the Upper West Side of New York, was one of the first important figures among the crop of singer-songwriters who rose to fame in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Her folk-pop lyrics laid the groundwork for what later became the signature sound of Lilith Fair (an all-female tour on which she was a regular). Furthermore, her hit single “Luka” helped convince record companies that female singer-songwriters were not a thing of the past, paving the way for names like Tracy Chapman, Michelle Shocked, Sinéad O’Connor… In 1987 she achieved stratospheric success with “Luka” and has maintained a strong and dedicated cult following ever since.
In her performances, devoid of external drama, she conveys profound emotion. Her voice, “clear and unwavering” (Rolling Stone), has been described as “a cool, dry whisper close to sandpaper” (The Washington Post). With the hallmarks of a masterful storyteller who “observes the world with a clinically poetic eye” (The New York Times), Suzanne’s songs have always tended to focus on city life, ordinary people, and real-world themes. Her work is instantly recognizable, as distinctive and thoughtful today as when it was first heard on the radio more than 30 years ago. “Vital and inventive music,” as NPR has described it.
