Joan Miquel Oliver
Some artists seem to have invented a country of their own. In the case of Joan
Miquel Oliver, that country is made of guitars, luminous phrases, dry humour,
domestic strangeness, everyday science fiction, love, solitude, familiar objects and a
way of looking at the world that is as precise as it is disobedient.
A composer, guitarist, songwriter and essential figure in Catalan-language music over
the past few decades, Oliver has built a body of work that is entirely recognisable as
his own: a universe where the apparently simple suddenly opens into unexpected
layers, where daily life becomes poetic without ever turning solemn, and where every
song seems to hide a small secret mechanism.
On 9 July, Joan Miquel Oliver returns to SONSDENIT at a particularly exciting moment:
with a brand-new album —Roïssos— released this year, and in a powerful, direct trio
format with Xarli Oliver on drums and Fran Sobrino on bass. A line-up that dresses the
new songs in the most essential way possible —drums, bass, guitars and voice—
and, precisely for that reason, brings them close to the audience with an almost
physical force.
In this new work we find Oliver at his most authentic and unmistakable: everyday and
Martian at once, warm and sharp, able to turn the smallest image into a pop
revelation. The record sounds organic, close, vividly alive; with huge drums, raw
guitars, a voice that tells rather than declaims, and that very particular clarity of his
for detecting the extraordinary hidden in the most visible —and often most overlooked
— layers of the world.
Joan Miquel Oliver’s return to SONSDENIT is no coincidence. He is an artist deeply
loved by the festival and by our audience, but also a creator fully in the present,
always capable of opening a new door while remaining radically himself. This Andratx
concert will therefore be a double celebration: a reunion with one of the most singular
voices in our music, and the live discovery of a freshly born repertoire, full of pulse,
intelligence and that playful mystery only he knows how to make.
📍The concert will take place at the Castell de Son Mas, in Andratx, an emblematic
building that forms part of the town’s architectural and civic memory. With its
serene presence and its character as a historic place returned to public life, Son Mas
offers a particularly beautiful setting for an open-air evening of music.
At SONSDENIT, venues are never just a backdrop: they bring atmosphere, story and
a diffferent way of listening. At the Castell de Son Mas, Joan Miquel Oliver’s music
will find a setting where the popular and the singular, the familiar and the
unexpected, can coexist quite naturally. As in his songs: all it takes is looking a little
more closely for the world to become slightly stranger, brighter, and more our own.
