Da Souza
On 7 October in the Es Gremi hall in Palma we will listen to the Mallorcan band Da Souza, who have just released their new album: “Días de Attrezo”.
The trajectory of Da Souza has always drawn a smooth and sustained ascent. If “Salsa agridulce” (2020) meant in a certain way an emergence, with the new and brand new album “Días de Attrezo” they are called to consolidate themselves among the big names of our scene. It is no coincidence that, after playing at festivals like Primavera Sound and Vida, this autumn they will be in charge of opening Antònia Font’s night at the Palau Sant Jordi. But this album was not supposed to be an album. The Mallorcans had been working for a few months on the soundtrack for a film when, unexpectedly, the project fell through and all those musical ideas were orphaned. After a few moments of doubt, they decided to redirect them and give them the form of songs. That initial essence of a soundtrack, however, ends up flying over the whole album, which can also be read as an ode to second chances. And perhaps because of all this, it has ended up being Da Souza’s most personal album. “Días de Attrezo” is a choral work where the personalities of all the members of the band contrast with each other, participating in the composition and alternating on lead vocals. It is a puzzle of heterodox pieces that, miraculously, fit together. “Calor de junio” levitates an inch above the ground while “24/7” dances to contemporary Latin rhythms. “Bomba de humo” and “Fotogramas” are big love hits, which would find a melancholic counterpoint in “Diarro” (where Eva Fernández collaborates) or “Maravillas”. We also find “Sombra”, a dream where dozens of tourist villas burn. Or the third adventure of Falcó, this time taking flight with the voice of Joana Gomila and the atmospheres of Laia Vallès.The new Da Souza material was recorded between two Barcelona studios (Can Sons and Angel Sound) and a driving school in Llucmajor (Mallorca) where the band set up their portable studio. Mixing by Panxii Badii, mastering by Victor Garcia and production by Pau Riutort (collaborator of El Guincho, Natalia Lacunza, Bad Gyal…), who returns to work with Da Souza after participating in some of their most successful recordings, such as the album “Salsa agridulce” (2020) or the single “Pep” (2021). Da Souza are Lluís Cabot, Àngel Garau, Biel Stela, Xavier Hernàndez and Guillem Portell. They debuted in 2013 with the punk energy “Flores y violencia”, under the Famélico label, and since then they have progressively moved towards a luminous and precious power-pop with “Gran salto adelante” (2016), “Fútbol de vanguardia” (2018), and the acclaimed “Salsa agridulce” (2020), as well as the EPs “Bossanova infinita” (2015) and “Boleros” (2021). With this “Días de Attrezo” they definitely find their own recognisable sound, a personality that is style- and scene-proof.
