Chicuelo
Some artists know tradition so deeply that they can afford to open windows within it.
Juan Gómez “Chicuelo” is one of them: a guitarist of profound, precise and luminous
touch, able to inhabit flamenco with the deepest respect while gently pushing it
towards new places, without ever losing its centre.
With Caminos, his new project, Chicuelo proposes a line-up as unusual as it is
revealing: flamenco guitar, double bass, drums and dance. With no singing, no cajón
and no palmas, the show moves through tangos, alegrías, bulerías and granaínas,
discovering other ways of telling stories through flamenco rhythms. Here, every
silence matters, every brush of sound opens a possibility, every gesture seems to
listen before it answers.
Chicuelo’s pure, richly nuanced playing meets the singular double bass of Manel
Fortià, the delicate and precise drumming of David Gómez, and the magnetic dance of
Karen Lugo, who is able to create new forms from the smallest whisper. Together
they build music of remarkable freshness, strength and artistry, where freedom does
not appear as a break, but as the natural consequence of a deep connection.
Caminos is a journey made of flamenco and imagination: a lullaby, a tribute to Django
Reinhardt, alegrías transformed by the double bass, bulerías breathing differently
through the drums. A repertoire that does not try to explain flamenco from the
outside, but to expand it from within, with intelligence, risk and a beauty born from the
listening between four artists in a state of grace.
At SONSDENIT, Chicuelo arrives with a project that fully reflects the spirit of the
festival: music with roots, but never still; tradition that does not close in on itself, but
moves forward; paths that open precisely because someone knows very well where
they come from.
📍The concert will take place at the Claustre del Convent de Sant Domingo, in Pollença,
a space for which SONSDENIT holds a very special affection. Since the festival’s earliest days, this cloister has been part of our history: a place we are always eager
to return to, among walls that have listened to so much music and that hold, in their
stone and silence, a deeply alive cultural memory.
And not only through SONSDENIT: the Claustre de Sant Domingo is also one of the
historic stages of Pollença’s musical life, linked for decades to the town’s renowned
classical music festival and to many other projects that have made this space a
place of encounter, listening and shared celebration.
At SONSDENIT, venues are never just a setting. At Sant Domingo, the architecture
gathers sound with a mixture of solemnity and closeness, history and open breath.
For Caminos, this dialogue will be especially beautiful: guitar, double bass, drums
and dance finding their echo among walls that know how to listen, and that will do
so again as if every concert were, still, a first time.
